What's new?
Charlie Hallstrom (1885)
b. 22 Jan 1864 Jonkoping, Sweden
Charles was born in 1863 in Jönköping, a town that about 40 years later would also be the birthplace of former Secretary General of the UN Dag Hammarskjöld. For one reason or another guy ended up in the US and on September 23 1885 the Providence Grays where in such desperate need of a pitcher that they called for the minor leaguer to deliver them to victory and take the team within one game of .500. So how did he do? Well he played all 9 innings and allowed a fairly disastrous 18 hits resulting in 16 runs against the Chicago White Stockings who won the game 16-8, he had 2 strikeouts though. The Swedish Wonder probably left most people wondering if they couldn’t find any other pitcher on that day. Charles never pitched a big league game again and ended up with an ERA of 11.00. The Grays folded after that season. Charlie lived to be 86 until he died in Chicago in 1949.
